This act was the first step towards conservation. The federal government sold cheap desert land on the condition that the owner would irrigate the soil within 3 years.

-The Forest Reserve Act 1891
This act allowed the president to set aside forests as reserves and national parks.

-The Carey Act 1894
This act distributed federal land to states on the condition that it be irrigated and settled.

-The Newlands Act 1902
This act allowed the federal government to collect money from the sale of public lands in the west to use for irrigation projects.

Books about nature such as "The Call of the Wild" and organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Sierra Club allowed people to get in touch with nature. Some conservationists, such as John Muir, wanted to conserve for beauty. Others, such as Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot, wanted to conserve nature but use it wisely.
