Humans Develop Wings

On December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, bicycle repairmen Orville and Wilbur Wright performed a miracle. They had experimented with flying machines for a while, but finally succeeded on this day with a plane that stayed airborne at 120 feet for 12 seconds.

America became fascinated by a new group of heroes- stunt fliers at fairs and public events. Airplanes were used more seriously in World War One. Companies began operating air passenger lines with the mail. The first transcontinental airmail route was established in 1920 from New York to San Francisco.

In 1927, the Flyin' Fool Charles Lindbergh flew solo from west to east over the Atlantic. His "Spirit of St. Louis" made it from New York to Paris in 33 hours and 39 minutes.

The airship had great impact on America. It fueled the American spirit even further and created a giant new industry. Unfortunatley, accident rates from planes were high. Planes were now used in war and dropped aerial bombs.

  1. Excellent plane pictures. They inspire me to develop wings with the rest of America!

No, really. The Wright Brothers had an amazing idea and worked for a long time to get it right, and as a result, the world got smaller! ...Honey, I shrunk the world.

  5. Our posts are very similar in that they both profile a new transportation, and its flourishing in the early 20th century in America. I enjoyed reading your post about how the airplane not only transformed America but also the world.

  7. "I believe I can fly! I believe I can touch the sky!" That's probabaly what the Wright borthers were singing... Amazing how quickly we went from the buggy to the railroads to the automobile to the airplanes in the sky!

  8. Great! Also to keep in mind is the fact that these new transportation breakthroughs were making American "Isolation" less of a reality with each passing year.

  9. This blog post is important too. 1) because with out the wright brothers nobody could be flying high in a G6, for those who do not know, a G6 is a Gulf Stream 650.

  10. Good point. New transportation would mean the US is more involved with international travel and affairs.

I feel a song coming on:

"IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL!
IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL!
IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL!
    IT'S A SMALL, SMALL WORLD!"

  11. Great post. The pictures are really cool and I'm sure that the videos are too though the computers are a tad bit slow... This was a really interesting post. I can't imagine a world without planes to carry mail and people. Thanks George for your clarification of what G6 is. My life is complete.

  12. Planes have been a large part of human life especially in wars and transportation. Though expensive, air travel is really convenient. Lindbergh sounds crazy to attempt his flight in 33 HOURS. Though harder to maneuver, planes are surprisingly safe. Excellent post.
