Food Safety

-The Meat Inspection Act of 1906
Passed under TR, and it required that meats shipped over state lines be inspected.
-Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906
Passed under TR, it was made to prevent adulteration (not adultery) and mislabling of food and pharmaceutical products.

Many US meat companies were discovered to be selling tainted meat, and Europe threatened to ban US meat imports. Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" described the filthy conditions of a US slaughterhouse, and opened the eyes to Americans of the unsanitary meat industry.
